Mark Twain popularized in the U.S. a phrase attributed to a Prime Minister of the U.K. that says: There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics.
For that reason, we though we should put together a list of facts taken from the November video game sales data released by The NPD Group:
- The Nintendo Wii outsold the Sony PlayStation 3 by more than 2-to-1. 476,000 Wiis were sold in November versus 197,000 PS3s. (Wii launched on Nov. 19, the PS3 launched on Nov. 17)
- Microsoft sold 511,000 Xbox 360 video game systems in November. Which means it was the top selling next-generation console for the month.
- Gears of War was the top selling console game in November with 1 million copies sold. It was followed by Final Fantasy XII, which sold 896,000 units, and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess took the third place with 412,000 copies sold.
- At 664,000 units, the PlayStation 2 sold more than each of the three new consoles.
- The top selling system was the Nintendo DS, which sold 918,000 units.
- Nintendo hardware outsold all others combined. Nintendo sold 476,000 Wiis, 918,000 Nintendo DS portables, 641,000 Game Boy Advance handhelds and 64,000 GameCube consoles that have them selling 2.1 million of the 3.9 million systems purchased for the month.
To sum things up, Microsoft and Gears of War chainsawed both the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3 but Nintendo portables and the PlayStation 2 sold more than any next-generation system.
The fate of this console war will be determined next year when Nintendo releases Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sony gets Metal Gears Solid 4 and KillZone 2 and Microsoft releases Shadowrun, Mass Effect, Too Human, Forza 2 and Halo 3.
