Microsoft Game Studios and Epic Games on Fri. announced that the Xbox 360 offering Gears of War has sold more than 2 million units worldwide.
The action game was released in the U.S. in Nov. and has sold 1 million copies to date.
"Gears of Wa' clearly has won the battle for the title of the must-have game of the year," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Corp. "Its phenomenal success is one of many reasons why Xbox 360 is the ultimate place to get together with friends to play this holiday."
According to Microsoft, more than 1 million unique gamers have engaged in 10 million online gameplay sessions. In addition, paid registrations for Xbox Live have increased more than 50 percent since the game's launch.
The Xbox 360 is enjoying brisk sales in global markets. In the U.S. the machine sold over 600,000 units in Nov. In Japan, the console's sales skyrocketed on the release of the new RPG Blue Dragon.
Microsoft expects to sell more than 10 million Xbox 360s worldwide by year-end.
