Installing Gentoo Linux on the Playstation 3

Gentoo Linux's project team has published information -- contained in its weekly online newsletter -- on how to load and use its popular distro on the new Sony Playstation 3, which is all the rage among gamers at the moment.

The author, Gentoo developer Sanjuro White, explains what is necessary for a user to do before starting the install, and gives step-by-step directions on how to proceed. The author also includes two screenshots of the system: the first, showing the booting of the Gentoo Linux PPC64 InstallCD; and the second, showing the system after the installation completes.

A Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) distribution has been available for the PS3 since October, thanks to a development deal between Sony and YDL publisher TerraSoft. However, YDL so far
has not been bundled with early PS3 shipments, despite earlier indications from Sony Entertainment's CEO, Ken Kuturagi.

In related news, LinuxDevices.com reports that
Sony-contributed Linux patches aimed at adding machine-specific features for the PS3 were recently merged into the stable 2.6.20 kernel tree. The patches should greatly simplify maintaining Linux kernels for the PS3, which is already supported by at least one Linux distribution, the article suggests.

The Gentoo PS3 Linux installation procedure, along with general compatibility notes, is available
here.
